DIY Gravel Logostyle
Apr.2020 // Digital Model; Graphic Rendering.
A competition-winning logostyle for a post-pandemic initiative by former pro-cyclist Ted King to bring the gravel-biking community together.
In 2020, with gravel-biking events cancelled, DIY Gravel sought to bring the racing calendar to you with each participant having their own, unique riding experience. The DIY Gravel logostyle is a collection of logos developed through data analysis and 3D-mapping of participants’ ride-data, resulting in stylistic cohesion even while each logo retains distinct traces of the rides it is based on.
Design Process
By using a webpage scraper plugin to extract data from fitness-tracking app Strava, I was able to parametrically generate surfaces in Rhino 3D with Grasshopper. These surfaces, or ‘ride fingerprints', became the basis onto which the logostyle was projected.
In the Wild
The DIY Gravel logostyle appeared on merchandise items sold to fundraise for the Krempels Center for Life After Brain Injury, supplementing the charity efforts of Ted King’s fully remote 2020 “The King Challenge”
